Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is the process of lightening the color of teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make a complete color change, but it will lighten the existing shade.
Causes of discoloration?
Discoloration of teeth can occur due to several reasons. The most common reasons causing discoloration are:
- Ageing
- Wear of teeth due to grinding
- Poor oral hygiene
- Ingestion of colored foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, colas, red wine etc.
- Tobacco use
- Tetracycline medication
- Consumption of certain antibiotics
- Excessive fluoride ingestion
HOW IS TEETH WHITENING DONE?
Your gums are carefully protected with a special covering. The whitening solution is applied to the teeth and activated with a special light in the dental clinic. Alternatively, a whitening gel is provided to you to be used with a custom-made tray at home.
HOW LONG WILL MY TEETH STAY WHITER?
The effects of whitening may last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. Ask your dentist for their opinion before you start the treatment.
